Home » Pelargonium sidoides extract for acute respiratory tract infections
The Facts:
- The herbal remedy Pelargonium sidoides (also called umckaloabo) helped relieve the symptoms of acute sinusitis in adults in 1 study and the common cold in another.
- The effects of Pelargonium sidoides in studies of adults and children with acute bronchitis were inconclusive.
- Adverse effects were common but not serious.
Dr Shaun Holt:
Like me, you were probably not familiar with Umckaloabo, a herbal remedy from the South African geranium. However, evidence has been mounting for a while that it is effective in treating infections of the respiratory tract, including “strep throat”. This Cochrane Review showed that it may well be effective in treating sinusitis, symptoms of the common cold and acute bronchitis. More studies are needed, but it may well be that in the future respiratory infection sufferers reach for this product as well as vitamin C and Echinacea.
