The Facts:
- Coenzyme Q10 may reduce exercise-induced fatigue and improve physical performance.
- 17 healthy volunteers received oral coenzyme Q10 (100 or 300 mg/day) or a placebo for 8 days during which time they were subjected to fatigue-inducing physical tasks.
- Individuals who took coenzyme Q10 reported greater physical performance and less fatigue during testing than those who took a placebo.
Dr Shaun Holt: There have now been several studies on the effects of coenzyme Q10 on muscles and the results are showing a pattern: it appears to improve muscle functioning and in this study improved physical performance and reduced feelings of fatigue. Given that coenzyme Q10 is involved in almost all the body’s production, there is a plausible biological reason why these effects have been seen. Supplements are available and fish such as mackerel and herring have high levels.
